Want a bank account far from home that still plays by global rules? Seychelles offers a stable banking system, accounts in major currencies and online access from anywhere. This group of 115 islands in the Indian Ocean, officially the Republic of Seychelles, is a well-known offshore jurisdiction for international investors. Used well, an account here adds asset protection and helps you spread your money across more than one country. This guide walks you through the banks, the paperwork, the costs and the rules, so you know what to expect.

Key Takeaways

  • Every commercial bank is licensed and supervised by the Central Bank of Seychelles.
  • Some banks set no minimum balance, while others expect a sizable first deposit.
  • You will need full KYC papers, and your account is reported to tax authorities.
  • There is no deposit insurance scheme, so plan large balances with care.
  • In February 2026, the EU removed Seychelles from its tax grey list.

Why Consider Banking in Seychelles?

Stability is the first draw. The central bank licenses and supervises every commercial bank in the country, as an IMF report confirms. The banking sector is small and closely watched, with seven commercial banks active in 2025.

Here is what the Seychelles banking environment gives you:

  • Multi-currency accounts in US dollars, euros, pounds and Swiss francs at banks such as Absa.
  • Internet banking, so you can pay suppliers and move money from anywhere.
  • Debit cards for everyday spending.
  • A stable home for money used in international transactions.
  • A way to hold part of your savings outside your home country.

Many people open an offshore account here to hold savings in a second currency. One honest note: an account here does not hide money or cut your tax bill. Your home country's taxation rules still apply, and your bank shares account data with tax authorities. Treat the account as a tool for access and diversification.

Which Commercial Banks Operate in Seychelles?

The central bank's list of licensed commercial banks names seven institutions, and its 2025 Annual Report confirms seven commercial banks operated that year. Most are local arms of foreign banks. Two local banks carry government ownership. Absa is a good example of an international bank group with a local subsidiary.

BankBackground
Absa Bank (Seychelles) Part of South Africa's Absa Group. It traded as Barclays until its rename.
MCB Seychelles Part of the MCB Group of Mauritius.
Bank of Baroda Branch of an Indian bank.
Nouvobanq Local bank with government ownership.
Seychelles Commercial Bank Local bank with government ownership.
Al Salam Bank Seychelles Started operating in 2016. Owned 70% by its Bahraini parent and 30% by the Seychelles Pension Fund (Al Salam Bank).
Bank of Ceylon Branch of a Sri Lankan bank.

We list these banks as licensed institutions, not as partners. Each one sets its own rules, and those rules change. Whether a bank takes non-resident clients, or companies formed abroad, is its own decision, so we check this for your case before you apply. Picking a suitable bank comes down to three things: the currencies you need, how you plan to move money and whether you can travel.

Do You Need a Seychelles Company to Open an Account?

No. Local banks accept personal and business clients, so you can open a Seychelles bank account as an individual or through a company. The bank process for opening accounts is much the same either way. Already own an offshore company in the Seychelles or elsewhere? Some banks will consider a company formed in another country, but each bank decides case by case.

  • Personal account: for savings, diversification and your own spending.
  • Corporate account: for trading, holding assets or paying staff and suppliers.

Using an IBC

Many Seychelles companies are set up as a Seychelles International Business Company, or IBC. Foreign investors can fully own and run Seychelles offshore companies. If you still need one, our Seychelles offshore company formation service handles the company setup and prepares the papers the bank will ask for. A Seychelles IBC must follow some ongoing rules:

  • Keep a registered office and a registered agent locally.
  • Keep registers of members, directors and beneficial owners at the registered office.
  • Keep accounting records at that office for at least seven years, under the 2021 amendments.

The Financial Services Authority oversees company registration for IBCs, while the central bank supervises banks. Banks may also check a company in Seychelles against the official register before they approve an account. Existing Seychelles IBCs go through the same review.

Account Features at a Glance

Here is a quick summary of the key banking requirements. Figures vary by bank, so we confirm the details for your case before you apply.

Timeline A few weeks to several months. It varies by bank and by how complete your file is.
Currencies USD, EUR, GBP and CHF foreign currency accounts at Absa.

Fees Opening, maintenance and wire fees vary by bank. Absa publishes its full rates and fees schedule.
Deposit protection No deposit insurance scheme, per the IMF's July 2024 report. Depositors get limited preference if a bank fails.

What Documents Do Banks Ask For?

Every bank runs full Know Your Customer (KYC) and AML checks. Banks require the same core papers, then ask for more based on your profile. Here are the required documents most banks ask for.

For the Company

  • Certificate of incorporation, plus the memorandum and articles of association.
  • Certificate of incumbency and, for older companies, a certificate of good standing.
  • Registers of directors and members, and a chart showing who owns the company.
  • A board resolution that approves the account.
  • Proof of business address and a business licence, if one applies.

For Each Director, Shareholder and Signatory

  • A certified passport copy.
  • A utility bill or bank statement no older than three months.
  • A bank reference letter or a professional reference.

Banks may also ask for additional documentation, such as a business plan, recent financial statements, contracts or invoices that show your source of funds. A clear file speeds things up.

How to Open a Seychelles Offshore Bank Account

Follow these six steps. Each open bank account checklist differs a little between banks, but the flow stays the same.

  1. Pick your bank and type of account. Decide on a personal or corporate account, then compare banking options on currencies, fees and remote access.
  2. Set up your company, if you need one. Form the company first, so its papers are ready for the bank.
  3. Gather your documents. Get certified copies of IDs, proof of address and company papers.
  4. Submit the application. Fill in the bank's forms and KYC questionnaire.
  5. Pass compliance checks. The bank reviews your file, runs background checks and may send follow-up questions.
  6. Fund and use the account. After approval, you get your account details, set up online banking and make your first deposit.

Opening an offshore bank account in Seychelles is not instant, and no bank or adviser can promise approval. Quick, complete answers to follow-up questions are the best way to keep things moving.

What Does a Seychelles Account Cost?

What you pay for a bank account for Seychelles banking depends on the bank, the type of client and the balance you keep. Plan for two kinds of cost:

  • Bank fees: account fees, ledger fees below a set balance and wire charges. Absa, for example, applies ledger fees when a commercial current account falls below its recommended SCR 100,000.
  • Our service fee: US$1,000 for help with bank selection, document preparation and your application.

Your Account Will Be Reported: Tax and AML Rules

Seychelles shares financial account data with other countries. The Seychelles Revenue Commission is the competent authority for CRS, and the country committed to its first exchange in 2017. For US persons, Seychelles signed a non-reciprocal Model 1B FATCA agreement with the United States on 1 July 2019. Under it, banks report US accounts to the Revenue Commission, which passes the data to the IRS.

Seychelles passed its first Anti-Money Laundering law in 1996. Today, banks work under the Anti-Money Laundering and Countering the Financing of Terrorism Act, 2020. Banks screen every owner, watch account activity and report suspicious transfers. Seychelles is not on the FATF grey list as of June 2026. Holding money here does not change your personal or corporate tax duties at home.

Is Your Money Insured?

No deposit insurance scheme exists. An IMF report from July 2024 notes that depositors instead get preference for up to R10,000 per account if a bank fails. If you plan to hold large sums, spread them across banks or countries.

How Is Seychelles Offshore Banking Changing in 2026?

The biggest news is good news. On 17 February 2026, the Council of the EU removed Seychelles from Annex II, the EU's tax grey list. The country had earned a Largely Compliant rating on exchange of information, according to the European Commission and the Seychelles Ministry of Finance. That closed a rough stretch. Seychelles went onto the EU blacklist in October 2023 and moved to the grey list in February 2024.

Reporting rules are also getting tighter. The central bank's 2025 Annual Report says the government moved to adopt the amended Common Reporting Standard, known as CRS 2.0, late in 2025. The same report notes 2025 changes to the IBC Act and beneficial ownership rules to improve transparency.

Since 1996, we have helped clients open accounts, and we have seen bank appetite rise and fall with listings like these. A listing slows reviews and brings extra questions. A delisting rarely brings instant relief, because each bank's risk team moves at its own pace. The files that get approved fastest explain the business and the money trail in plain words from day one.

The EU's next list review is due in October 2026. If Seychelles keeps its clean status, demand for offshore banking services in Seychelles will likely firm up over the next year or two. Expect KYC standards to stay tight in this jurisdiction, though. Easier access will probably come from clearer files, not looser rules.

Is a Seychelles Account Right for You?

A Seychelles account can give you well-regulated banking, several major currencies and a simple way to spread your money across borders. It works best when you accept full reporting and arrive with a clean, complete file. If you also need a company, pair your account with Seychelles company formation.
